Find the F-U-N in Patio Furniture

Decorating a home has always been an exciting undertaking that requires much planning and research. Though daunting at times, it can be a lot of fun spending hours browsing through catalogs, websites, and specialty stores, collecting ideas on colors, styles, and accessories that will help you to achieve the look that you envision. It’s a process not taken lightly, as very few people have the money – or the inclination – to redecorate every few years. By contrast, the procedure for choosing porch or patio furniture has always been much simpler – yet far less enjoyable.

For the most part, it has traditionally meant a trip to the local five-and-ten, where you would find plastic chairs that collapsed, metal chairs that quickly rusted, lounge chairs that folded up with you still in them, and, perhaps, a noisy glider that would stick on one side. The only accessories were mosquito-repellent candles in buckets, and Japanese lanterns. So it was that, while interior decorating provided the opportunity for one to revel in yards of fabric, endless palettes of colors, and hundreds of styles, outdoor furniture departments were barren wastelands.

Well, things have certainly changed in the world of patio furniture. With leisure time dwindling, and the costs of taking vacations soaring, people are opening their eyes to the wonderful things that are in their own backyards, and taking full advantage of them. Porches and patios are now playing major roles in people’s lifestyles, and there has been an incredible population boom in gazebos and decks. People now see them as outdoor havens, where they spend significant amounts of time, not only relaxing, but entertaining as well.

Because of this shift in perception, over the past decade or so, tons of outdoor furniture choices have been sneaking up behind us. If you haven’t turned around to face them yet, you really should, because they are fantastic! Forget about the wobbly plastic chairs, rusty metal seats, and gliders that won’t glide. CedarStore.com is a decorator’s paradise, offering patio furniture in endless varieties of styles, colors, and materials, as well as a wide range of accessories.

If you’re looking for wooden patio furniture, you’ll love their durable, hand-crafted cedar, pine, oak, cherry, and teak chairs, tables, garden benches, porch swings, gliders, lounges, and rocking chairs, available in designs from the most rustic, to the ultimate in elegance and sophistication. You’ll also find a breath-taking assortment of dining sets, bar and bistro tables and chairs, picnic tables, accent tables, coffee tables, and ottomans, along with accessories, such as cushions, umbrellas, planters, birdbaths, and more.

There has also been an incredible improvement in metal and synthetic patio furniture. CedarStore.com has beautiful aluminum outdoor furniture, available in a rainbow of colors, that won’t rust, bend, fold, break, chip, or crack, even if it’s left outside all year long. There’s also a selection of gorgeous, maintenance-free polywood and vinyl furniture that’s virtually indestructible. One of their most spectacular collections features wrought iron dining sets with colorful tabletop designs made from art glass that has been hand-set into stone, and mortar.

With patio furniture that complements every style, motif, and color scheme of any porch, patio, gazebo, deck, and backyard, CedarStore.com puts a ton of fun into exterior decorating. If you don’t find what you’re looking for on their website, call 888-293-2339, to speak to a professional consultant about customizing an item, or e-mail contact@cedarstore.com.

Free Guide To Buying Garden Furniture

Buying Garden Furniture

Your garden is an extension of your home, and creating an outdoor living room is an easy way to add extra space to any home. All you have to do is choose the right garden furniture.

So, just as you choose a sofa or a dining set, you want to make the right decision when it comes to choosing your garden furniture. There are two major factors to bear in mind: what do you want your furniture for, and what materials will your garden furniture be made of.

Who will use your garden furniture?

First, think about how you will use your garden furniture. Are you going to have lots of barbecues and larger gatherings, or is your garden a haven for just the two of you? Or maybe you have a larger garden, and want to create several seating areas – one for dining, one for catching the late evening sun where you can relax with a book, and a secluded little area where you can enjoy a morning coffee and a magazine once everyone else has gone off to school or work.

Dining sets for the garden

For those barbecues, think about a large rectangular table (36-46in), which will comfortably seat 4 or 6 people. Dining-style chairs with high backs (and cushions) will be more comfortable.

Folding garden furniture

If space is limited, and you don’t think you’ll use your larger garden furniture on a regular basis, think about choosing chairs and tables that can be folded up, and stacked in a garage or shed. Folding chairs are useful when you have extra guests.

Table for two

For an intimate arrangement, bistro tables are a great choice. A round table with two chairs is perfect for popping out for that summer drink or cup of coffee and won’t take up too much space. You could add a couple more folding chairs in case you have extra visitors.

Curl up in a garden arbour

For an attractive seating area off a garden path or next to a beautiful border, a garden arbour bench is perfect. The bench is usually big enough for two (or one, curled up with a good book), and growing climbing plants around it can enhance its beauty. For a quick effect, choose annual climbers such as sweet peas, which will form a scented haven, or a Clematis Montana, which by its second year will be rioting over your arbour, regaling it in pale pink/white flowers. A slower growing climber, such as ivy or Russian vine can be planted at the same time.

What will your garden furniture be made of?

The style of your garden, your budget, and storage facilities will dictate what your garden furniture will be made of.

Mixed materials

For a stylish contemporary look, go for garden furniture comprising wood, metal and glass. Colourful all-weather material will really make a statement.

Hardwood garden furniture

Hardwood such as teak, oak and ash is the most durable choice for wooden garden furniture. Make sure your garden table and chairs comes from a recognised supplier who’s a member of the WWF Global Forest and Trade Network or FSC. To keep it looking its best, wooden garden furniture should be protected from the elements (store in a shed or garage over winter, or invest in some good-quality garden furniture covers) and treated regularly with wood preserver. But wooden garden furniture can also be left outside all year round if you want it to weather naturally.

Softwood garden furniture

Softwood garden furniture, such as pine, is beautiful in most gardens, though particularly suited to more rural, cottage-style environments. Ensure that your chosen garden furniture is made with wood from forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Look out for the FSC logo.

Aluminium and metal garden furniture

If you want low-maintenance garden furniture, metal garden furniture is for you. It’s easy to just wipe clean and metal and aluminium garden furniture can be left outside in any weather conditions.

Glass garden furniture On a cloudy day (and we have a few of those!) glass garden furniture will reflect any sun there is, adding light to a shady area. It’s also easy to maintain – just wipe clean.

Resin furniture

Resin garden furniture is a good budget option. It’s easy to clean and lightweight.

Garden furniture accessories

Parasols

To shade a garden dining table – or even keep off those spots of rain, a parasol is essential. Look out for some fantastic coloured-parasols this year, or stick to classic dark green or cream.

Garden chair cushions

Even the most comfortable garden furniture will benefit from a bit of padding. Adding a new set of cushions is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to update your garden furniture.

Garden furniture buying guide Q&A

I’m short on space? Can I still have garden furniture?

Think about buying a folding garden table and chairs. It can be moved out of the way if the children want a game of football.

How about garden furniture for a sunbathing fan?

Look for a recliner or lounger. Both have several positions, so you can sit more upright if you’re reading, or lie back for a snooze in the sun.

Where will the children sit?

If you have a large family, or have lots of young visitors, you might like to buy them their own garden furniture. There are some wonderful colourful garden furniture sets around for children, with matching chairs, tables and parasols, all built on a miniature scale. If children are going to sit on adult garden furniture, choose solid, stable chairs that are hard to tip over, and with rounded edges to prevent knocks and bumps. Washable cushions are a good idea too!

what should I do about my LANDLORD!?

Hi there. Okay, so my husband and I are renting a house from an older lady who’s never been a landlord before now. She had 3 houses, 2 which she lives in and one which she doesn’t (which is where we are now.) We asked her if she wouldn’t mind, and if there was space, if we would be able to move over some of our things before June 1st to make moving day easier, and she said "no problem" so about 5 days before June, we got to move in a couple of boxes and furniture items into one room of the house.

Now, it is the 6th already and she STILL has all of her closets FULL of junk, cupboards in the laundry room are full of junk, and even the basement had 4 large chairs and some blankets. We have a shed, which is locked and full of her stuff, and the gate from the back yard to the alley is locked, and we don’t have a key so to take out our garbage we have to load it into a truck and drive it around the block. She also promised us a built in dishwasher, and now claims that she can’t fit one in without wrecking the countertops, so she’ll get us a portable one.

I called her today and asked very politely when she was able to get us a dishwasher and get some of her items out of the house so that I could know when to be at home, and she got very offended and said that she let us move in early, so we owe it to her to let her move out late. She also has a job gardening, so she’s too "busy" to deal with this stuff right now.

One other thing, she made us sign a form saying that 0 will come out of our security deposit to steam clean carpets, but if she didn’t steam clean them before we moved in, then can she really do that?

What should I do about my landlord!!?? My family NEEDS a dishwasher and we really need to get our own storage put away, because I’m going insane with all the clutter! Thanks

    Metal Garden Furniture

    Metal Garden Furniture

    Metal Garden Furniture

Metal as the material for garden furniture has a long history in the UK.

However most older furniture was made of cast iron and would readily rust and require treatment.

Usually a wire brush and rust treatment along with hours of painting would be the norm in Spring for the trusty metal furniture owner.

With the advent of Aluminium garden furniture the situation was much improved.

Aluminium does oxidize leaving chalky white deposits but needs little or no maintenance compared with iron made furniture.

Aluminium garden furniture has other advantages as well as not turning your patio brown.

It is light weight and easily moved to a more sunnier position.

It is much more affordable than say Teak and will last a long time.

I should mention that it does matter about the quality of the furniture set you buy.

I have many people say to me for both metal and wooden garden furniture, “I bought my set from …. and it was only £…. and was great the first year. But when I went to it the following spring it just fell apart.

You should also be aware on the cheaper versions of garden furniture the metal is hollow and water can find it’s way into the tubes.

You may end up with a cold wet surprise when moving your furniture!

    Metal Garden Furniture Best Buys

I think the four best companies for metal garden furniture are Li-Lo leisure, A-MIR, Ascalon’s and Marvells.

    Li-Lo Leisure

Li-Lo supply some really excellent quality furniture, you will find them stocked in the likes of Asda.

We have just started dealing with them.

They have a massive range far to many to show in this article.

I will be adding information to the supplier database when I have time, but I would say for quality and value they qualify as a best buy.

    A-MIR

Based in Birmingham they have been trading for many years and have a huge range in most of the multiples.

You can see the high quality powder coated finish on the Eclipse range which has a full range of furniture sets and benches and loungers in the same style.

    Ascalon

The furniture from Ascalon would be great on a patio or in a conservatory, it has a beautiful style of it’s own.

It reminds me of shabby chic or antique furniture.

There is a large range from bistro sets to Arbours and benches. If you don’t like modern furniture and you want a more stylish classic look then they are worth considering.

    Marvells

Marvells started with some beautiful art deco wall art and mirrors etc.

There site www.marvells.com is a veritable wonderland for all sorts of cool stuff.

They have started stocking some good looking garden furniture sets, the best being below.

I would say “watch this space” with Marvell’s I think they are going to be big in the next few years.

I am a smaill business owner from Stoke on Trent.

    I retail Gardening products online.
    www.peakgardencentres.co.uk

I have many years experience buying for chain store multiples and am passionate about all things garden.
