Building A Greenhouse Plans – Building A Backyard Greenhouse

Building a backyard greenhouse is a challenging task for a beginner grower. Like most people who loves to plant flowers, vegetables and even trees would prefer having a greenhouse in their backyard. Plants like most life forms grow faster when the temperature is higher. And when the temperatures drop plants tend to stop growing in order to conserve energy just to stay alive while waiting for suitable ambient conditions to return. A greenhouse therefore functions to shelter plants from unsuitable weather and climatic environments in its simplest forms.

Building a greenhouse has become a very fascinating hobby and it is also a very productive one. In designing a greenhouse it is important to consider the optimum light transmission. This is one important requirement for plants to grow; having ample amounts of sunlight. The first thing that you need to decide on is the size of the greenhouse that you want to make. You must determine what plants you plan to grow; are these flowers or vegetables. You must choose also the best area that you will place your greenhouse. And the most important aspect is the budget. Ask yourself how much you can afford to spend.

Once you have made a decision on all these aspects, you must pick a greenhouse design. The most popular design is made from polycarbonate, the milky-clear plastic you often see used on smaller backyard greenhouse. If you choose a more permanent type design, it is usually made of windows and glasses. However, choosing the right design is really up to your personal preference, style and taste.

You may use some affordable greenhouse kits that can be put together using tools you probably already own. Or you can refer to building a greenhouse plans; this is one very useful guide to help build your own backyard greenhouse.

The Advantage Of Building A Carport Or A Garage

aluminum carport
by kevandem

The Advantage Of Building A Carport Or A Garage

I am often asked my opinion about aluminum carports.  As an experienced contractor I have built my fair share of carports and garages.  Often people have bought a second car or an RV and are considering adding extra vehicle storage options to their existing house.  The question of whether to add a carport or a garage to their existing dwelling can be a difficult question.

Aluminum carports and garages both serve similar purposes.  Primarily, they both provide some sort of shelter for a vehicle.  Of course the nature of the shelter differs between the two types of structures.

Carports are best for providing shelter from the sun and rain.  If the primary purpose of your structure is to either keep your car shaded from the blazing sun or to provide the passengers with some rain protection then you will be well suited with a carport.

The advantage of building a carport over a garage is two-fold.  The cost of building materials will be less and the labor required to finish the construction will be less.  Essentially carports are easier to build and cheaper.  The construction of a full fledged garage will require approximately double in construction materials and approximately 60% more in labor costs.  The biggest expense will be the garage door.  If you build your garage yourself you will be looking at devoting 60% more of your time into the project.

The biggest advantages in building a garage over a carport are security and temperature control.  A garage has the distinct advantage of being able to be locked.  This feature provides peace of mind and obvious value. You are able to securely store other items in the garage such as bicycles and garden equipment.  The other big advantage is climate control.  Although most garages are not airtight, it is possible to include a heat source in most garages.

The addition of either a carport or a garage to your home is a smart idea.  Think carefully about the intended purposes of the structure before you make a final decision.  And remember always deal with a reputable local contractor that is able to provide you with references.

Keep in mind also the sturdiness of your greenhouse as well as if you plan on using it all year long or just for the better part of the year.

5 Different Kinds of Garden Sheds to Consider Building

5 Different Kinds of Garden Sheds to Consider Building

When considering building a garden shed, you have to realize that there are a number of options to choose from. You do not have to settle on a shed that you have no interest in just because it is all that is out there. Of course there are a number of variables that can determine what kind of shed you build. But it is important you understand that you have options. Here are five different kinds of garden sheds to look into.

1. Basic shed

If you are looking for a generic shed to accommodate your typical gardening needs, you can construct a basic shed fairly easily. You can build the shed however big you choose, but a common size to start with is an 8’X12’ shed. You can go with a gable roof, single or double doors, and as many windows as you choose. The great thing about the basic shed is you can put however much money into it as you want.

2. Three-in-one garden shed

A three-in-one garden shed has everything you can imagine. It has a regular garden, a gazebo and a potting shed all in one package. The sky is the limit with what you can do with this construction option. You can build all three in one, or you can leave out the potting shed or gazebo. This can be perfect for storing your garden tools as well as taking care of any garden needs you may have.

3. Garden tool shed

There is nothing worse than trying to garden, but not being able to find your tools. It seems impossible to keep everything organized and in the right spot if you do not have a tool shed. A garden tool shed can help you keep track of all of your tools from rakes, hoes, shovels, and buckets. If you do not have much room in your yard for an actual shed, a garden tool shed can be perfect because it is small yet allows you to stay organized.

4. Redwood cedar shingle garden shed

If you are looking to add a little style and class into your garden shed, a redwood cedar shingle shed is the way to go. It is nothing overly big, but certainly grabs your attention. You can place it in just about any garden corner. Plus, the cedar shingle roof is long lasting. In fact, the roof will actually improve with age. This is something you cannot find often with sheds as they can tend to deteriorate from time to time. If you plan on building it yourself, expect it to take some time. But it is well worth the effort once you have a completed project.

5. Large shed

If you have the room, building a large shed can be amazing for your yard. It gives you the ability to store however many tools you want, build a table or bench of some sort to handle your gardening inside, and you can add firewood racks to stay warm during those winter months. Who would have ever known you can garden in the winter.

As you can see, there are a number of different garden shed possibilities to take into consideration. You will have to take other variables into account like size, location and the cost of constructing the different sheds. But it is nice to know that you have options to choose from. While the five sheds listed in this article are among the most popular, there are plenty more you can choose from. Take the time to get online and see what kinds of choices you have. The last thing you want to do is just settle for something you do not like.

Garden Sheds the Most Popular Garden Building

metal garden sheds
by Stuart Herbert

Garden Sheds the Most Popular Garden Building

Garden sheds are the most popular garden building and they aren’t just a place to store the lawnmower and tools. These days there is a growing trend in alternative uses for the garden shed, such as: playhouses, home offices and workshops. They come in a variety of sizes, prices, and construction material, and are available from online and offline stores.

The different styles and types of garden sheds are based on the roof structures: the most common is the Gable which forms a triangular roof. The Salt Box has a short front gable roof and a gently sloping rear roof. The Hip roof or Cottage Style roof has four sides all angled or sloped, and the Gambrel roof looks similar to a barn.

Garden sheds mainly come in three different types of material. The most common material is wood and they are generally the cheapest to buy. However, wooden garden sheds do need some regular maintenance to keep them weatherproofed. Metal garden sheds tend to be used when long-term strength is needed, as they are sturdy, tough and durable. Again they need to be maintained to protect them from rust. Many garden sheds are also available in a variety of plastic materials and are made from heavy moulded plastics, such as: PVC and polyethylene, and need very little maintenance. There are many different brands and makes, but remember not all sheds are created equal.

Once you’ve decided what material you want for your garden shed, you need to choose the size and style you want. Garden sheds can be made into a centre-piece for the garden, and for the discerning homeowner, some garden sheds come with finials, eaves and verandas. If money is a bit tight but you want the shed to be a centre-piece, choose a shed where extras can be added at a later date, such as: louvre windows, skylight roof sheets and double doors. Garden sheds can also be subdued so they blend in with the architecture of your home and landscape.

Most garden sheds are bought as a flat-pack and can be put together in such a way you do not need to be a professional carpenter to assemble them, although limited carpentry skills are recommended. If putting your shed together is something you don’t want to do, for whatever reason, an option is to have your shed erected by professionals, so you do not have to struggle with the heavy and bulky sections that come with the shed.

If you can not find the garden shed of your dreams, you could always design one yourself or buy designs from you local timber yard, bookstore, or the internet, and build it yourself. Basically there are fours steps to building your garden shed: foundation and floor; frame; siding; roof. The foundation/floor is the solid base for your garden shed and can consist of treated skid timbers, patio stones, concrete base, or pressure treated joist with a plywood floor. The frame is the skeleton of the structure and supports the walls and roof. The siding can be optional and is the covering of a finished wall made from plywood, pine, cedar, or vinyl. The roof is the cover and can be made from asphalt shingles, cedar shingles, aluminium, or metal, etc. At the end of your project you will have had the satisfaction of having built your own shed and saving money at the same time.

Once you have a garden shed, you will wonder how you ever managed without it. They are no longer the domain of spiders and cobwebs, and the uses of garden sheds are limited only by your imagination.
